March 10, 2021 - The National Popular Vote Compact scheme has DIED in the Senate Committee! February 2021 - Senator Derek Kitchen, D-Salt Lake City, has introduced a bill to have Utah join the NPVIC. That bill is SB-0121. He claims that he has received so many requests for it from constituents that he is running it as a consensus bill. See news article here. A Moderate Risk - We expect that Utah will get a LOT of visits from the paid sales staff of the National Popular Vote offices in California. The Full Court Press will be on in Salt Lake City! The last NPVIC Bill that was introduced was in May 2018 by GOP Rep. Jeremy Peterson, R-Ogden. Peterson was the Chair of the Government operations Committee. He did not seek re-election in November 2018. Though Utah is generally a pretty Conservative, Constitution-adhering State, it is exactly the type of State that the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact planners would absolutely love to have join them. They so want to be able to declare their scheme a 'bi-partisan' effort, but after 16 years, they have so far not been able to do so. Prior to that, the NPVIC sales team convinced a State Senator (Howard Stephenson) and a Representative (Kraig Powell) to introduce their Bill in Feb 2012. Both Bills died without significant movement in either Chamber. We think that Utah is a Moderate Risk to join the NPVIC scheme. |
